What do you view as the two biggest opportunities for your firm, and what are the two biggest threats?

For Phillips Murrah, our biggest opportunity is easy: TEXAS.  We opened our Dallas office about a year-and-a-half ago, and as a new entrant to the Texas legal market, we see virtually unlimited opportunities to gain clients, expand existing relationships and add top talent. Over the past 18 months, we have grown our Texas office from one full-time lawyer to five while increasing the quantity of work being handled for Texas-based companies more than tenfold. While much of that work is for new clients, we are also providing an expanding range of service to existing clients based in Texas and elsewhere.

The second opportunity for the firm is the ability to provide existing Oklahoma-based clients with niche services from Texas-based lawyers. In some cases, there are only a handful of Oklahoma lawyers in a niche practice while the pool of practitioners in Texas is much larger.

While Texas presents a huge opportunity, the size of the legal market and the number of competitors also serve as a threat. As a roughly 75-lawyer firm, we cannot chase every opportunity. We must remain focused and chose carefully.

Growth also presents a challenge to our firm culture, which has been a cornerstone for our success. As Phillips Murrah added, and then added to, a second office, we have worked diligently to include Oklahoma lawyers on teams serving Texas-based clients and vice versa. Since opening in Dallas, half of our Oklahoma lawyers have worked on relationships managed by a Texas lawyer while everyone in our Dallas office has worked on a relationship managed from our Oklahoma City headquarters. Fortunately, Oklahoma City is as close to Dallas as Austin and much closer than Houston.

PM attorneys publish Oklahoma Product Liability Law article in Bar Journal

By Chris Pearson, Thomas G. Wolfe, Lyndon Whitmire and Cody J. Cooper

Bar Journal CoverThe Oklahoma Bar Association published an update to an article “An Overview of Oklahoma Product Liability Law” in the April 18, 2015 edition of the Oklahoma Bar Journal.

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE: An Overview of Oklahoma Product Liability Law

Any discussion of Oklahoma product liability law must start where Oklahoma product liability law started, with the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s 1974 opinion in Kirkland v. General Motors Corp.

In Kirkland, the plaintiff was driving her friend’s new Buick Opel on Interstate 44 in Tulsa County.

It was alleged that the driver’s seat back suddenly collapsed, leaving her unable to control the car. As a result, her vehicle hit the highway median and then struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Approximately one month after the accident, General Motors (GM) issued a recall letter to all owners of Buick Opels concerning the “seat back adjustment mechanism.”

Phillips Murrah President and Director, Tom Wolfe co-authored the original article with former colleague, Chris Pearson, who is now a partner at the Law Firm of Germer, Beaman & Brown in Austin.

The first update, which garnered a 2003 Maurice Merrill Golden Quill Award from the Oklahoma Bar Association, featured Phillips Murrah Litigation Practice Group Leader and Director, Lyndon Whitmire and Ruth Anderson Gates, who is now senior in-house counsel at Nissan North America Inc.

The article, now in its second update, includes contributions from Phillips Murrah Associate Attorney, Cody Cooper.

Wolfe discusses strength, growth of Firm

Interviewed by the Journal Record, Thomas G. Wolfe, president and managing partner, gave his take on the firm’s strength, commenting on the recent hires that include 10 new attorneys, a new IT Director, and 10 paralegals. Bucking the national trend, Wolfe explains that Phillips McFall is seeing growth where other firms may be seeing a decrease in workforce. He also states that Phillips McFall expects to see even more growth over the next five years.

OKC law firms bucking national trend

June 18, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City law firms don’t seem to be sharing in the downturn experienced by those in some states, particularly large national firms that have recently announced layoffs.

A check with local firms Tuesday reveals legal business is on the rise, with some firms reporting several hires over the past year.

National labor statistics indicate a loss of more than 9,500 legal-sector jobs over the past year, more than 4,000 over the last six months or so.

Data for Oklahoma show a drop of a few hundred legal-related jobs over the past year, from 12,900 last June to about 12,500 in April of this year.

Tom Wolfe, president and managing partner at Phillips McFall, said his firm has added 10 attorneys, a new IT director and 10 paralegals over the past year.
“We’re on more of a growth pattern than anything else,” he said.

Wolfe said the firm has also not changed pay scales or related costs for economic reasons.

“In connection with our IT department and our marketing department, we’ve actually added capital to that, because that’s kind of what the market does and that’s what we needed to do,” he said.

Wolfe said Phillips McFall has concrete plans to grow over the next five years.

“We’ve been very fortunate,” he said. “But we’ve got good clients and have had good work and good attorneys.”

Wolfe said Oklahoma is somewhat insulated from the current downturn due to its healthy oil and gas industry.

“I think the influx of capital investment opportunities in Oklahoma make Oklahoma somewhat immune to some of the problems other states are facing,” he said. “I think law firms are benefiting from that, particularly on the business side.”
