Phillips Murrah recognized as a Top Workplace by The Oklahoman

Top Workplaces finalOn Sunday, The Oklahoman Newspaper published their annual list of Oklahoma’s Top Workplaces. Phillips Murrah takes pride in our healthy, positive workplace, and the Firm is honored to be on the 2015 list.

“We are excited to be recognized as having one of Oklahoma’s Top Workplaces,” said Phillips Murrah President and Managing Partner, Tom Wolfe. “We do a lot of serious, complex work at our Firm, and we strive to make sure to provide a positive, balanced atmosphere for our attorneys and staff.”

Phillips Murrah is the only Law Firm on the Oklahoma’s Top Workplaces list.

NEWSOK: HOW THE TOP WORKPLACES WERE DETERMINED

This is excerpted from an article written by Doug Claffey, CEO of WorkplaceDynamics:

To create the 2015 Top Workplaces list, The Oklahoman partnered with Philadelphia-based WorkplaceDynamics, a research firm that specializes in employee surveys and workplace improvement.

Read more about the methodology here. Below is a quick rundown of how surveys were presented:
Top Workplaces paper

The employee survey included 22 questions measuring seven different factors. Three My Job factors measured how employees feel about their day-to-day job:

My Work: training, work/life balance

My Manager: cares about concerns, helps employees to learn and grow

My Pay & Benefits: Three OrgHealth factors measured whether or not employees are working together toward a common goal:

Direction: where the company is headed, its values, and its leaders

Execution: how the company will get to where it wants to go

Connection: feeling appreciated and work is meaningful

Lastly, the survey measures Engagement, which includes retention, motivation, and referral.

The Phillips Murrah rowing team, Law & Oarder, completed the 2015 season on Friday with a solid, 500-meter run of 1:52.818.

“It has been amazing to see how wholeheartedly the firm supports our team,” said Phillips Murrah attorney and L&O team leader, Melissa Gardner. “I definitely think rowing is an outlet to build relationships outside of those you’d normally build in the firm.”

Over the two seasons during the summer of 2015, the rowing team has consisted of Firm Shareholders, attorneys, non-attorney directors in marketing and IT, legal secretaries and accountants.

“Rowing gives me a sense of commitment and accountability to our team and it brings our ‘work family’ together in a vastly different environment,” said Marketing Director, Dave Rhea. “It’s a very interesting activity. This is my first year, and I am hooked.”

“Plus, I think the regattas are a great way for the firm to build morale,” Melissa added. “As someone who started at the firm within the last two years, it was a great way to speed up relationship building within the firm – both with those who are on the team and all those who are just interested!”

“Having the opportunity to be a part of the Phillips Murrah rowing team has been an awesome experience,” said Deena Baker, a Legal Secretary at Phillips Murrah. “I have accomplished something I never dreamed of even attempting, but was determined to try after watching last October’s race!  Had the time of my life and am ready to jump back in next year!”

Phillips Murrah sponsors Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake event

Five teams of Phillips Murrah employees, families and friends showed off their bowling talents to celebrate the firm’s fundraising efforts toward Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake annual event.

Heritage Lanes welcomed Phillips Murrah for the firm’s night of bowling on May 14, made possible by donations from firm employees and members of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Phillips Murrah Director Byrona Maule spearheaded the campaign, raising $3,700.

“Bowl For Kids’ Sake is the single largest fund raiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters – it’s a great way to provide financial support for matches and the bowling party is a lot of fun,” Byrona said. “It was an easy decision on my part to facilitate Phillips Murrah’s participation in BFKS! “

The firm hosts a series of events and raffle drawings to garner support for the BBBS campaign.

“I’ve been a Big Sister/volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters for the vast majority of the last twenty five years,” Byrona said. “The children I have mentored are bright, intelligent, caring people who just needed an additional adult in their lives to help them through the unfortunate challenges that underprivileged children face. After experiencing first-hand the changes that having a mentor can have on a child’s life, it’s become my passion to do everything in my power to help provide a mentor to every child who needs one – and that takes financial resources. “

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorneys at Phillips Murrah hosted a gift wrapping party on Dec. 18 to wrap donations for the Oklahoma Family Network. The firm raised $4,000 for the 2014 holiday season.

“The attorneys and legal professionals at Phillips Murrah recognize that community service and philanthropy are important components of our profession and we seek out opportunities that would allow us to make a positive impact on our local community,” said Monica Y. Ybarra, attorney at Phillips Murrah. “Our partnership with the Oklahoma Family Network is a great way to have a direct impact in the lives of Oklahoma families dealing with special health care needs and disabilities. Through OFN, we are able to connect with families in need and provide much-needed essential items…as well a little fun!”

The Oklahoma Family Network serves families whose members are critically ill or have other health issues or disabilities. Phillips Murrah has raised funds to buy gifts for families and provide funds to OFN for emergency medical bills, food shopping, utility payments, etc. for years.

“This event is a fulfilling opportunity for the whole firm to get involved and go beyond the practice of law to help struggling Oklahoma families that do not have the means to celebrate Christmas,” said Cody J. Cooper, attorney at Phillips Murrah. “By giving gifts to families in need, the families are able to celebrate Christmas when they wouldn’t otherwise and the parents get peace of mind knowing that their children will have presents under the tree. It helps them take focus away from their struggles, even if only for a day.”

29 Attorneys Selected for 2014 Edition of Best Lawyers

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, SEPTEMBER 11, 2013 — Phillips Murrah, one of Oklahoma’s largest law firms, announced today that 29 of its attorneys were selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© 2014. Marc Edwards, Sally Hasenfratz, and Mel McVay, shareholders in the Firm, have been named “Lawyers of the Year” for Government Relations, Land Use and Zoning Law, and Litigation – Bankruptcy, respectively.  According to Best Lawyers, “Only a single lawyer in each practice area and designated metropolitan area is honored as the “Lawyer of the Year,” making this honor particularly significant.”

“Our attorneys are proud to be consistently recognized by peers for delivering outstanding legal service to our clients,” said Tom Wolfe, a 2014 Best Lawyer® selection and the Firm’s managing partner.

Among the Firm’s breadth of legal services, more than 20 practice areas are represented by the attorneys that have been honored as this year’s Best Lawyers®, including:  banking and finance law, energy and natural resources, real estate, and tax law.

Since it was first published in 1983, Best Lawyers® has become universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence. Because Best Lawyers® is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which almost 50,000 leading attorneys cast nearly five million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor. Corporate Counsel Magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”
