Michael D. Carter of Phillips Murrah P.C. has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Kevin Driskill Outstanding State Representative Award. DRI is the leading organization of civil defense attorneys and in-house counsel.

Each year, the award is presented to a current or immediate past DRI state representative who has made significant contributions toward promoting DRI membership within his or her state; has been instrumental in implementing a significant, unique program to foster the relationship between DRI and the State and Local Defense Organization (SLDO) to enhance DRI’s stature; and/or has enhanced the public’s view of the role of the defense lawyer in the broader society.

Carter has been a DRI State Representative since 2018 and was DRI’s State Membership Chair in 2017-2018. He will be honored with the Kevin Driskill Outstanding State Representative Award during DRI’s annual meeting in October in Chicago.

“I am thrilled and humbled to receive this award, made more special by being named for our late colleague from Oklahoma, Kevin Driskill, who I first met when we were freshmen at the University of Oklahoma,” Carter said. Driskill’s legal career spanned over 35 years before he passed away in 2014.

Carter is an experienced litigator and represents a wide variety of parties in environmental and toxic tort cases in state and federal courts. In addition, he is a long-time policy advisor on workers’ compensation issues in the state of Oklahoma.

Michael D. Carter, Phillips Murrah Of Counsel Attorney, has been accepted as a new member to the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC).

“As an active member of Defense Research Institute (DRI), I was aware of the FDCC as an exclusive, invitation-only sister organization of DRI. I was honored and humbled to receive an invitation to apply and be vetted for membership in FDCC, and even more honored to be accepted as a member,” Carter said. “FDCC is famous for its collegiality and camaraderie, as well as substantive law programs.”

An upcoming panel discussion plans to “bridge the divide” between attorneys in the courtroom.

Phillips Murrah is sponsoring “Behaving Badly is For Toddlers: Bringing Civility Back into Civil Litigation,” a Continuing Learning Education opportunity hosted Dec. 12 at the Oklahoma Bar Association.

“This CLE was established in an effort to remind both sides of the value of civility in (and out) of the courtroom,” said Christine Sterkel, Executive Director for the Oklahoma Association for Justice. “We hope that people will leave with a greater sense of compassion for one another and the work they are doing, and that they are reminded that we’re all working towards the same goal of justice for our clients.”

Phillips Murrah Attorney Michael D. Carter was recently elected to be President of the Oklahoma Association of Defense Counsel, who is presenting the panel with the OAJ.

“Phillips Murrah is proud to support this effort by Oklahoma Association of Justice and Oklahoma Association of Defense Counsel to improve civility in the litigation practice,” he said. “This will be a special opportunity to bring together attorneys who come from opposite sides of a sometimes combative environment and advocate for civility and professionalism.”
