As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 profile, we spotlight Erica Blackstock and the perspective she brings to her role and to the firm’s culture.
Erica chose Phillips Murrah for a combination that proved hard to find elsewhere: sophisticated, interesting work paired with a culture where coworkers become genuine friends. She had worked at a few law firms during law school, but interning at Phillips Murrah revealed a profound difference. The attorneys here are deeply invested in both the work and one another. That sense of camaraderie has stayed with her ever since.
One of the most defining periods of Erica’s career arrived during the pandemic, when the firm shifted to working from home for several months. She was a fifth-year attorney at the time, a stage she now sees as ideal for that transition, with enough experience to handle matters independently while continuing to develop her own style and approach to practicing law. That period gave her the confidence to trust her own judgment, and it was also when she realized she wanted to spend her entire career at Phillips Murrah. Years four through seven in practice can be when many lawyers hit burnout or start eyeing a different path, but Erica saw firsthand how the firm’s partners prioritized both employees and clients during a genuinely challenging time. It confirmed she was exactly where she wanted to be.
Outside of work, Erica is grounded by a close circle of friends and family and inspired by travel. She and her husband try to take one big trip every year. While life sometimes gets in the way, they always enjoy having the next adventure to look forward to. This year, they’re hoping to make it to Scotland.
