As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 profile, we spotlight Kayla Kuri and the perspective she brings to her role and to the firm’s culture.
Kayla was nudged toward law school by a business law professor who noticed her spending the entire semester peppering him with hypotheticals. She took the hint. She started at Phillips Murrah several years into her career, and by that time, she knew exactly what she was looking for in a law firm. It was clear to her that Phillips Murrah had a collaborative and entrepreneurial culture, and the people here were great attorneys and good people. She was able to keep performing sophisticated legal work with people she genuinely liked. As she puts it, it was a no-brainer.
In her current role, Kayla finds the most fulfillment in coming up with creative solutions to complex problems. No two deals are ever alike, and each one presents unique challenges. Many of her clients, particularly in M&A transactions, are often experiencing the process for the first time and rely on her to guide them through it. Being able to do that and ultimately achieve a successful closing is, in her words, very rewarding.
Kayla values Phillips Murrah’s strong community focus above all. The attorneys here are active members of the community as well as excellent practitioners, and the firm always supports those efforts. She believes that this quality has been key to the firm’s success over the past 40 years.
Outside of work, Kayla says that right now, her main focus is her garden, but she also enjoys antiquing, needlepoint, and Thunder basketball. A well-rounded roster of interests that helps her maintain perspective and balance.
