As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 Profile, we spotlight Cody Cooper and the perspective he brings to his role and to the firm’s culture.
Cody will be the first to admit he stumbled into practicing law. In college, he initially studied chemical engineering with pre-med ambitions, then switched to Management Information Systems and Finance. He interned at Devon Energy, where he received an offer for a full-time IT role. Grateful for the chance, he still couldn’t see himself in that role long-term. A business law class at OU sparked his interest, and several Devon attorneys encouraged him to consider law school. These conversations confirmed his interest, and he decided to enroll.
Cody clerked at two other firms before Phillips Murrah. While both were great options, the culture and people at PM set it apart. The attorneys here were intelligent, kind, supportive, and welcoming throughout his clerkship. That experience made choosing where to start his practice simple. It’s the same reason he has stayed his entire career.
Outside of work, Cody says nothing grounds you better or more quickly than your children. His kids are amazing, but they are also quick to humble him at every opportunity, including calling him “bruh” instead of dad. His family inspires him to be the best person he can be because he wants to provide them with the best possible life. He is incredibly grateful for his wife and kids.
