As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 Profile, we spotlight Kathryn D. Terry and the perspective she brings to her role and to the firm’s culture.
Kathy joined Phillips Murrah after a career path that was, in many ways, a fait accompli. She grew up running around the OU law school where her mother was on staff, so attending law school seemed like an inevitability. She came to Phillips Murrah in her 12th year of practice, having worked at two other law firms and as General Counsel for a telecommunications company. Each of those stops had both rewarding and challenging aspects for her career development and work-life balance. Phillips Murrah was the perfect fit at the right time, and she knew her practice here would include both professional leadership and the collaboration and encouragement amongst colleagues she was looking for.
In her current role, Kathy finds deep meaning in guiding clients through legal disputes, not just for resolution, but also to help them improve their business and personal lives. Many of her cases involve difficult, emotional events for her clients and their companies, management, and front-line employees. She is quick to add that her colleagues and friends at Phillips Murrah make coming to work every day easy. She loves practicing law because the work is rewarding and interesting. The added bonus is that she loves the people she practices with.
A defining moment in her career came early, when the first insurance coverage litigation she worked on revealed personally interesting and intellectual aspects of the dispute she had not anticipated. She immediately gravitated toward coverage work, and today, insurance coverage accounts for about 75 percent of her practice. She leads a team of five other attorneys who support that practice, a leadership role that has helped shape her professional path in meaningful ways.
