As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 profile, we spotlight Byrona Maule and the perspective she brings to her role and to the firm’s culture.
Byrona knew she wanted to be an attorney from a young age when her grandmother told her she “thought and argued” just like her grandfather, who happened to be an attorney. From that point on, she never wanted to do anything else. After spending five years as in-house counsel, she had the opportunity to join what was then Phillips McFall McCaffrey McVay and Murrah. She immediately knew it was where she wanted to be when she discovered a room full of partners who actually practiced law. Currently, she focuses on employment law, with an emphasis on helping clients navigate the administrative and judicial systems. Byrona finds joy in seeing a policy, contract, or disciplinary action she helped craft play a key role in resolving a dispute in the client’s favor. Handling one of the very first Title VII cases was a defining moment in Byrona’s career. She was able to resolve the situation in a way that was a win-win for everyone; that experience helped shape her approach to work today by reinforcing the importance of finding solutions that work for everyone involved.
What Byrona values most about Phillips Murrah is that the firm recognizes hard work and talent – full stop. If you are willing to work hard and have the skills to be a good lawyer, you will succeed here, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, or religion. When she joined in 2001, there was one part-time female litigation partner. Twenty-five years later, Phillips Murrah has grown into a balanced firm that reflects the Oklahoma City community, and she believes that a commitment to hiring talent has been central to the firm’s success over the past 40 years.
Outside of work, when Byrona needs peace of heart, she turns to two sources that have intersected in her life: her faith and music. Faith-based music helps her gain clarity. She has also been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters nearly continuously since 1989, advocating for children and helping them reach their potential, which she describes as one of the most rewarding experiences she has ever had. These pursuits help her maintain perspective and balance in life.
