Phillips Murrah is proud to be a sponsor of the Juneteenth on the East festival for the second year. The multi-day event is organized and produced by With Love OKC, a non-profit created by Oklahoma City artist and entrepreneur, Jabee Williams, and the Oklahoma Mural Syndicate to bring public art, cultural events, and education to the Oklahoma City’s East End District.
“Juneteenth on the East is a celebration for all people to come together and peacefully rejoice in freedom, exchange in culture, and uplift the community.” – With Love OKC

The festival took place June 21–22 along N.E. 23rd St., between Hood Street and Kelham Ave. and offered a variety of family-friendly activities, including live music, murals, dance performances, food trucks, and local vendors. For more festival details and photos from the event, visit their Facebook page.
Prior to the festival, on Fri., June 20, Red Coyote Running and Fitness sponsored a free-to-the-public 5K race, in which Phillips Murrah participated. The route began at the start/finish line, located on N. Rhode Island Ave. just south of 23rd St., and meandered through the scenic Ross Heights and Martin Luther King neighborhoods.
According to the U.S. National Park Service website, Juneteenth National Independence Day, which occurs on June 19, is the one of the oldest known commemorations related to the abolition of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday on June 17, 2021. The word “Juneteenth” is a Black English contraction, or portmanteau, of the month “June” and the date “Nineteenth.” Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when enslaved people of African descent located in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from the slavery system in the United States.
