On Aug. 17, Phillips Murrah attorney Jonna Vanderslice spoke to the Oklahoma City Chapter of the Oklahoma Society of CPAs on the topic of name, image, and likeness rights, commonly known as NIL. The constantly evolving landscape of the almost billion-dollar industry, and its implications for the future, encouraged lively discussions among the well-attended accounting-industry audience.

“We discussed the definition of NIL, evolution of the NCAA’s definition of ‘amateurism,’ considerations for the future of NIL, and potential tax considerations for student-athletes who are engaging in NIL deals,” Jonna said of her CPE Continuing Education presentation at Quail Creek Golf & Country Club.

In a Jan. 2023 article about NIL, titled Ruling Gives Student Athletes NIL Opportunities, But Questions Remain, Jonna wrote that “questions remain regarding the short- and long-term implications of this major shift in amateurism rules. Individuals and institutions must remain conscientious of and work to understand applicable rules and regulations, as well as the changing landscape of NIL, to hit their NIL deals out of the park.”

“We learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed her talk,” said Mark Neumeister, President of the OKC Chapter of the Oklahoma Society of CPAs and Partner at Arledge & Associates, P.C.
