As Phillips Murrah celebrates 40 years of service, we’re highlighting the people whose work has helped shape the firm along the way. In this 40 for 40 profile, we spotlight Mark E. Golman and the perspective he brings to his role and to the firm’s culture.
Mark’s road to the law was practical rather than predestined. As a liberal arts major with no family business waiting for him, going to law school and becoming a lawyer made as much sense, if not more, than any other option on the table.
He spent more than three decades practicing law before joining Phillips Murrah, but once the door opened, he walked through it as fast as he could. When his prior firm opted to merge into a national outfit, Mark chose a different path. He was drawn to Phillips Murrah by relationships built over a decade of working alongside several firm directors, particularly Tom Wolfe, along with the firm’s entrepreneurial spirit and its commitment to giving its lawyers a platform to help clients reach their goals at a reasonable cost.
What Mark finds most meaningful is the chance to build long-lasting relationships, the kind that turn colleagues and clients into friends.
A pivotal moment occurred after Mark spent his first dozen years focused on commercial bankruptcy and business litigation. He was asked to represent a client acquiring a competitor with manufacturing operations spread across eight or nine states and nationwide sales reaching hundreds of millions of dollars. Mid-negotiation, the same client asked him to lead the purchase of another competitor of similar size. Both deals were completed, and within about a year, Mark shifted from being a courtroom lawyer to a transactional attorney.
The most important quality to Mark about Phillips Murrah is the respect and camaraderie shared among all of its teammates.
