Career development and workplace insight are important goals of Phillips Murrah’s Summer Associates program, and law students Lindsay Mayes, Bailey Stevens, Alexis White, and Caleb Stowell got a glimpse of our employment culture while gaining a wide range of real-world legal experience. As our time with Phillips Murrah’s 2025 Summer Associates has come to a close, we would like to take an opportunity to express our gratitude for the time and effort they contributed over the past six weeks. To get a better idea of how they experienced their time at Phillips Murrah, we invited each to share their thoughts about the experience, a little about themselves, and their motivations to pursue a legal career:

When the new film incentive bill was drafted in 2021, she helped the Office work closely with legislators and lobbyists to push the bill through the state legislative process. Lindsay enjoyed being part of that journey so much that it inspired her to pursue a career in law.

I honestly was not sure what to expect. Last summer, I interned at a district attorney’s office, so Phillips Murrah has been my first experience at a law firm. If anything, I thought a big law firm would consist of quiet halls and closed doors. My time here has been just the opposite. There’s plenty of collaboration and doors are always open.

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with the people I’ve met at Phillips Murrah. Everyone (including the amazing support staff) has been kind, willing to answer questions, and fun to work with. Not only is everyone great at their jobs, but they genuinely enjoy each other’s company, and I think the work product is even better because of it.

Compared to my classes, I have gained so much practical knowledge this summer. Some of my favorite experiences have come from shadowing attorneys during their court or client interactions. Law school is mostly legal theory, and it has been so exciting to see that theory applied in practice.

One of my favorite parts of my experience at Phillips Murrah is the collaborative atmosphere the firm fosters. I feel like I could ask any person at the firm, and they wouldn’t hesitate to help me. The clerkship also offers so many opportunities for growth. I’ve taken on a range of projects across practice areas and had the opportunity to work on several different types of projects.

This experience is hands on and has made me excited about all the different ways I could practice law. Law school gets bogged down in theory, and it’s often a challenge to figure out how that theory would apply in the real world. At Phillips Murrah, I’ve been able to see how the law is applied.

The firm provided more support than I could have ever imagined. It’s easy to say “you can ask me anything” and difficult to create a culture where I actually feel comfortable asking anything. Here, I knew any question I had I could ask. I am incredibly thankful for the people I’ve met and learned from and the experiences I’ve had while at Phillips Murrah. I am surrounded by incredible attorneys and staff who exemplify hard work and compassion and are always willing to lend a hand.

Alexis White

Alexis White is a 1L law student at Oklahoma City University School of Law, where she is a Hatton Sumner Scholar, Vice President of the Christian Legal Society, and Secretary for the OCU Federal Bar Association. Alexis also earned her Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the University of Oklahoma, and she is also multilingual, speaking Spanish and Portuguese. Alexis said the two factors that led her to pursuing the legal profession were being fascinated with the Law and Order: SVU courtroom scenes while growing up and later observing attorneys working while working as a Public Information Officer in the District Attorney’s Office in the years prior to attending law school.

Alexis said:

My general impression is that Phillips Murrah is intentional and genuine in how everyone is treated. Every little detail is thoughtful and purposeful – including how the building was constructed, and how the clerkship program is organized. This is a firm that produces great work, has great attorneys from whom to learn, and deeply invests in its employees.

I enjoyed the work more than I anticipated. My background was in criminal law, so civil law was like a foreign language to me, but I loved being challenged every day. The attorneys here are approachable, so I knew I could ask any questions I had and dive deeper into my projects.

It is so helpful to see how the concepts and theories from law school apply to the practice of law. It solidified the concepts I learned in law school and taught me more than I could learn in a classroom.

Following in the footsteps of his family, Caleb was originally a pre-med student. However, he found a passion for the law after some exposure to legal thinking in his pre-law classes.

I loved my time at Phillips Murrah. I think everyone has nervous jitters when they first start a job or internship, but I was very surprised at how friendly everyone was. PM stresses the importance of a good workplace culture, and I am glad to have experienced firsthand just how great that culture is. It didn’t matter if it was a Director, Associate, or Legal Assistant, everyone always greeted me with a smile and was willing to answer my questions. I was also impressed with how much everyone here at PM cares about their work, clients, and making sure they do the best job possible.

I really enjoy the research aspect of the law and using that research to try and formulate arguments. I also enjoy writing, which was a big part of the summer program, so I had quite a bit of fun. The last six weeks at PM have been one of the highlights of my legal journey. Working at Phillips Murrah really helped me to realize just how wide the legal landscape is. I was pleasantly surprised at just how many different areas of law I got to learn about.

Law school can be quite theoretical, so it was very fun to actually experience what the day-to-day looks like for an actual attorney. I really enjoyed working on projects where I recognized things that I had just learned in class and being able to see what the theory from school looked like in practice. I got to work on projects that encompassed multiple different subjects from law school and was able to see how it all fits together.
