Mary Westman is an Oklahoma attorney, Morgan horse breeder and registered nurse with an MBA. Mary provides legal representation in all aspects of equine-related businesses and activities including legal advising, business formations, preparing or reviewing contracts, litigating equine disputes and equine welfare advocacy. She also authors the Oklahoma Equine Law blog and stays current on equine related topics through participation on the following equine & animal law clubs, committees and associations: American Bar Association Animal Law Committee & Equine Law Sub-Committee; American Morgan Horse Association; Sooner State Morgan Horse Association; United States Equestrian Federation; and both the Oklahoma & American Horse Councils.
While Mary's law practice focuses primarily of equine law, she also has over 25 years’ experience in the healthcare field. Prior to being admitted to the Oklahoma State Bar in September 2015, she served in executive, clinical and operational roles where she collaborated on numerous clinical quality improvement initiatives with members of the hospital and medical staff. During the course of her healthcare career, Mary served as Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Compliance Officer, and Assistant Vice President of Quality Improvement.
Mary earned a Juris Doctor Degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law graduating with honors as a merit scholar and in the top 5% of her class. She also received a CALI Excellence Award in Legal Research and Writing and is a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Honors Fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
A native of West Virginia, she now lives with her husband, David, in Norman, Oklahoma. Mary and her husband have a blended family of eight daughters, twelve grandchildren, three dogs, and two cats. Together, they also own a Morgan (La Cheval Morgans) horse breeding operation.
